Time and Space #2: In Heaven

In physics, the official phrase is space/time.

I have deliberately chosen to use the phrase time and space or time/space based on Revelation 4.

Here is the backdrop.

Chapters 1-3 are about Jesus intervening here on earth in a personal, positive (albeit overwhelmingly intimidating) dialog with John.

Chapters 5 and following are about God’s intervention here on earth in mostly non-user-friendly ways.

But before that, John is given a snap shot of an ordinary day in heaven.  Just business as usual.  No drama.  No judgment.  Nothing special on the agenda.

In that short chapter, we see the relentless sanctification of time and space IN THAT ORDER.

The guardians of time are the Four Living Creatures.  They are similar in some aspects to the cherubim from Ezekiel 1, but also dramatically different.  They seem to be closest to the throne of the Ancient of Days.

Their song is:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”  Rev. 4:8  NIV

(Notice the fractal of six, in the double three.)

We tend to think of holiness as primarily the result of thoughts and actions, but their focus is on the perfection of God’s uniformity across time.

For most of us, we are not who we used to be.  And for most of us, a lot of our past is impacting our present.

And we are hopefully leveraging our present to change who we are and what we will be and do in the future.

God has no such dynamics.  The uniformity of His time is celebrated relentlessly by the Four Living Creatures as the most core component of heaven’s spiritual maintenance program.

Then, as an antiphonal response, the 24 Elders engage with not only sound but also movement, bowing physically and removing their crowns.

There is a lot of speculation about who they are.  One thing we know for sure is that they are governmental in some form or another.  We can tell that from their crowns.

So they bring motion (which requires space) and have their own song.

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”  Rev. 4:11 NIV

(Notice the fractal of six, in the double three.)

Their celebration is overtly about creation.  After all, they would not have governmental authority if there was not some space to rule over.

So this is my rationale for using the term time and space.  It looks to me as though that is the sequence of their being sanctified in heaven.

  1. I find it interesting that in the sequence of the five levels of holiness, time is also first. Land/space comes second, and THEN people and the abstract concepts such as birthright and office. In practical application, I wonder if that specific order of time and then space is what makes it possible for us to do generational cleansing. I mean, GOD is the one who actually does it, but what makes it possible in our living reality. We can go back in time to address such and such an issue, while our “space” stays in the present.

  2. Wonderful insight, thank you so much.

This is profound beyond words… and what you have drawn out here gives a glimpse of the awe-filled and awe-inspiring, a small taste of pure perfection, like some form of invisible art too beautiful for human eyes to see that yet resonates whether people recognize it or not. To rightly align with this, even though a mystery, would be so wise and is so great that we just don’t know what we don’t know.

Yet, we so need to “connect” with it.

My heart cry is for this, and it so resonates. You had said something in a previous blog about celebrating, and I am already celebrating what I believe is a God-aligned (or re-aligned) timing of an appointment this week. Can’t explain the details or even explain it, period, but my spirit knows such a joy in the midst of “the stuff of life” as this time-space – as you say, starting with TIME — unfolds and prevails. And there’s something about “prevailing” that seems attached to this time-space – pure dominion, and the honor and glory and majesty of it in truest, pure holiness.

How beautiful…. just beautiful. Thank you for connecting with it and sharing.

May we all resonate, recognize, and celebrate, flowing in the physics of our God and His perfection reflected in heaven’s response, and in the coming days, in spirit and in truth, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness like never before, on earth as it is in heaven.

I actually read this scripture this morning as well. Rev 4:5 really blessed me . “Lightning, noise and thunder came from the throne.” We are facing a severe draught in Cape Town, but for a few weeks i visited family up north. Each time a Highveld thunderstorm broke out i felt such joy, as if it came straight from God. Great to see scripture say it did. The noise truly felt like nourishment straight to my spirit. And to think growing up I was scared of the thunder.

This is just beautiful! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
